An Alaska Geomatics degree means opportunity to explore and survey wild terrain for the very first time. Surveying land where the last surveyor who walked that ground was there in 1915. Where you will encounter wildlife and nature most people never have a chance to see or experience. Alaska is where the adventurous choose to work and play. The UAA Geomatics program offers cutting edge educational opportunities and equipment. We are the only Geomatics department in the state and our program encompasses:
Surveying
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
Mapping
Remote Sensing
Photogrammetry
Geodesy and Map Projections
Hydrography

Our graduates play a key role in filling these job openings. Students are often offered internships during the summer months which lead to career jobs as soon as they graduate. Relative to entire US economic trends, Alaska looks solid.
Newsweek says of the engineering industry:
As the U.S. economy continues to struggle, a few careers are proving strong enough to weather the economic storm. Job outlook in the Engineering sector is still promising. U.S. News and World Report's list of "Best Careers for 2009" includes various areas of engineering. Every industry, across both public and private sectors, are in dire need for innovation and new ideas. Look for demand for mechanical engineers that focus on energy efficiency and in new fields such as biomedical engineering and computer/software engineering. While certain lower-skill engineering positions are more vulnerable to overseas outsourcing, there will be a strong need for highly skilled engineering specialists. This is where an advanced degree in an engineering specialization can make a difference.
We offer a curriculum and instruction with the latest industry standard software. Our students have over $940 K dollars worth of equipment with which to learn Geomatics. The Trimble Geomatics Lab is equipped with two LASER Scanners. The AeroMetric, Inc. Alaska Region Photogrammetry Lab has three state-of-the-art digital stereo plotters. All of this in the incredible Alaska setting. Come study, learn and enjoy life in The Last Frontier at UAA.
